Aklavik Accommodations
Aklavik Northwest Territories Travel Information
Aklavik means 'the place of the barrenland grizzly'. It was once a thriving base for the Hudson's Bay Company, as well as a trading and trapping center, and became the administrative center of the Western Arctic region. However, because of Aklavik's location in the middle of the largest delta in Canada, it was regularly flooded by the Mackenzie River, and the newer Inuvik took over its administrative role.
There are no roads into Aklavik, but one can visit by air from Inuvik or on ice roads in the winter. Be sure to stop in on the museum, original company store, as well as restored log cabins, which are all reminiscent of days gone by.
