This small community, located on the Mackenzie River, is home to the Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary, where over 3,000 wood buffalo reside. In 1963, 18 wood buffalo were sent here to preserve the species, and they have been happily roaming the park since. Many can be seen from the road, and escorted tours of the attraction are also available. Fort Providence also offers guided sport fishing expeditions with a local tour company.
